Paturau River in Nelson - West Coast is an exposed beach break that has dependable surf and can work at any time of the year. Offshore winds are from the southeast and there is no shelter here from cross shore breezes. Does not handle onshore winds very well Tends to receive a mix of groundswells and windswells and the ideal swell direction is from the west southwest. The beach breaks consists of lefts and primariliy left reef breaks. and also offers a left hand point break too. Best around low tide. Crowds are never a problem here. Watch out for dangerous rips.
